Google is updating how Chrome handles ad experiences starting May 15, 2026. If your site uses aggressive ad layouts on desktop or mobile web, this is something worth checking now.
Google says Chrome will begin enforcing the updated Coalition for Better Ads Standards starting May 15, 2026.
Publishers are being advised to review their sites inside the Google Ad Experience Report and make sure they comply with the updated standards to avoid potential interruptions.
What changed? Â
The Coalition for Better Ads updated its Desktop Web and Mobile Web standards after conducting new research with more than 55,000 respondents across:
-
US
-
UK
-
Germany
-
Brazil
-
Japan
-
India
According to the Coalition, the goal was to refresh the standards based on how people experience ads today across the web.
The following were added to the Better Ads Standards.
Desktop Web Â
-
Ad density higher than 50%
-
Ad density higher than 30% when combined with a sticky video ad
Mobile Web Â
-
Sticky, pop-out video ads
-
Sticky video ads combined with large inline ads
The updated standards were announced on January 14, 2026.
The Coalition also stated that organizations applying these standards âwill not consider these updates to be âliveâ until May 15, 2026 at the earliest.â
What is the Ad Experience Report? Â
Google describes an ad experience as the combination of:
-
Site layout and behavior
-
Content and ads users are exposed to
This can include:
-
The creatives shown on pages
(example: autoplaying video ads with sound) -
How ads are implemented on the site
(example: high ad density on mobile devices)
Google says research shows highly annoying or distracting ad experiences may discourage users from returning to a site.
The Ad Experience Report is designed to show ad experiences identified as violating the Better Ads Standards.
If a site review results in a âFailingâ status, the report may show:
-
The violating ad experience
-
A brief definition
-
The affected page URL
-
Images or short videos showing how the experience appeared
Google also notes there may still be other annoying or misleading ad experiences on a site that were not found during the review.

What publishers need to do Â
Google recommends fixing all listed ad experiences found during review.
The workflow may involve:
-
Your webmaster
-
Your ad operations specialist
-
Internal teams handling site implementation
After fixing the issues, submit the site for review again.
Google notes that the review applies to the entire site domain, not only individual subdomains.
Once submitted, Google reviews the site again and reports whether any issues remain.
If you ignore it Â
Google says publishers should review compliance before enforcement begins to avoid potential interruptions.
